While plantar warts are not generally among the most harmful of foot conditions out there, you probably don’t want them sticking around any longer than they need to!

Unfortunately, many traditional ways of treating plantar warts can be quite unpleasant. Acids and freezing can sting, and surgical removal can hurt. And while warts can eventually go away on their own, that may take years.

But now there is a much easier, more effective, and more comfortable solution for plantar warts available, and we are proud to provide it at our practice: Swift Treatment!

Swift is a breakthrough in wart therapy. To understand what makes it so great, it helps to know what makes warts such a pesky problem to begin with.

Why Warts Are So Difficult to Treat

Plantar warts are caused by strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The virus can slip into the top layers of the skin via tiny cracks, cuts, and other weaknesses in the surface. Once within, the virus forms those all-too-familiar rough, thick growths.

Now, whenever a virus invades, our immune system is typically sent on alert to head out and destroy it. Plantar warts are tricky, however, because they remain near the surface of the skin. This isn’t a big “patrol area” for our immune system, so the virus is often left at peace—much to our annoyance.

Swift therapy addresses this problem in a novel way, helping our own immune systems do their jobs.

How Swift Treatment Works

Swift is a tool that delivers controlled, low-powered microwave energy into the area of a wart, initiating a beneficial response.

If you remember high school science, microwaves can heat up and “excite” water molecules, causing them to start bouncing around. This happens within our cells, and generates some heat and friction in the area.

Our cells respond to this heat and friction by releasing special proteins in the area. These proteins serve as signals to our immune system that something isn’t quite right, and causes it to swarm the scene—where they then find HPV hanging out. Once aware that the virus is there, the immune system will begin eradicating it.

What to Expect from Swift Therapy

A typical course of Swift treatment lasts 3-4 sessions, spaced about a month apart. Each session lasts only about 5-10 minutes.

During a session, the Swift device will be applied to each area affected by warts, providing a 2-second dose of microwave energy. The total dosage and length of each session will depend on the size and severity of your case.

There is nothing you need to do to prepare before an appointment, and you can continue on with your day as normal once a session is over.

The Benefits of Using Swift

Compared to more traditional methods of treating plantar warts, Swift has several huge advantages:

  • It is much more comfortable. Most patients do not report any significant pain during a Swift treatment. Some report a minor pinching sensation that is similar to an injection, which lasts only 2 seconds per application before immediately vanishing. No anesthesia is used, and it is a much gentler option for children.
  • There is no damage to the skin. Where chemicals and cuts can cause some damage to healthy skin, Swift only heats interior layers of skin—and not enough to burn.
  • A faster response. Some patients’ warts may clear up after only one or two sessions.
  • No aftercare. You won’t be feeling any lingering pain that will cause you to hobble around for a bit after a session. You won’t have to deal with bandages, special shoes, or anything of the sort.

Consistency in treatment. Since peeling acids and cryotherapy can damage healthy skin, it is not uncommon for doctors to be cautious with these treatments to avoid going too deep. However, this can increase overall treatment sessions and prolong the discomfort the patient must experience. With Swift, these dangers are non-existent, meaning that it can deliver more reliable results in the initial treatments.
